In 2018 I was living in San Francisco. While I grew up in the Twin Cities, I left for the West Coast after my sister passed away suddenly.
I already had nearly two decades of work experience under my belt in marketing and advertising, but at that point in my life I felt like it was "now or never" to see what else the world had in store for me. My perspective started shifting while I lived in a 300 sq. ft apartment in the heart of SF. I was surrounded by Michelin-starred restaurants, and world-class entertainment and culture but I longed for nature, for space, for a closer relationship with the universe.
I love to cook and I guess you could call me a "foodie." I attended two years of cooking school and earned a sommelier certification. But I'd never grown my own food. While living out west, I met people who had left the city and were living and working on farms. I hadn't considered this because I'd never grown anything. Not even a house plant. After making the decision to move home, and some chance encounters, I ended up in a beginning farmer program with Big River Farms in MN.
I bought my homestead in 2019. It was a fixer upper that needed a lot of TLC, pus 21 areas of fallow land.
After meeting my partner, Luke, we have transformed the house and the land into a working farm where we grow herbs, vegetables, garlic, and more. We've planted fruit trees and native plants and have worked tirelessly to return the land to a state of serenity.
The name "Tamera Acres" is in honor of my sister, Tamera, who passed away in 2015. I know she would be proud of what I've done and continue to do here. It's a neverending adventure and learning process. Thank you for coming along for the ride.
